Pyramidal canopy with late summer green foliage of Katsura.Facts About Katsura

Cercidiphyllum japonicum

Native to: Japan
Crown: Pyramidal
Height: 60 feet
Width: 40 feet
Growth Rate: Moderate

Characteristics: The bark of the Katsura is deeply furrowed and peels in strips. It has small red fruit and heart-shaped foliage that is blue-green with finely textured violet-red new growth. Fall color is from yellow to scarlet and it is fragrant in fall. This tree can become multi-branched, but it can be maintained to form a single, upward growing specimen.

Negative Features: Katsura is sensitive to dry, hot conditions. Low branching and multi-stemmed habit requires regular pruning to develop and maintain and 8'-10' high canopy suitable for street tree use.

Uses: Good for all street situations where room allows on arterial, collector and residential streets.

Comments: Katsura is a good choice where it is protected from winds and excess heat. It becomes quite broad and is pyramidal in form.
