130 Columnar Goldenrain

Tall, late summer canopy of Columnar Goldenrain.Facts About Columnar Goldenrain

Koelreuteria paniculata 'Fastigiata'

Native to: Shanghai and China
Crown: Narrow, stiffly fastigiated
Height: 30 feet
Width: 6 feet
Growth Rate: Fast

Characteristics: Columnar Goldenrain has long-flowering yellow clusters in summer. Purplish red foliage in the spring turns bright green then turns yellow in the fall. Colorful fruits are fat, papery capsules which seem to resemble clusters of little Japanese lanterns; used in arrangements. It tolerates cold, heat, air pollution, a wide range of soils, wind and is drought tolerant once established. Its form is narrow with dense branching.

Negative Features: Low branching requires regular pruning to develop tree form and maintain an 8'-10' high canopy suitable for street use.

Uses: Good for underneath wires, cul-de-sacs, narrow setbacks and tight situations where there is little room on arterial, collector and residential streets. This tree is a good choice when a shorter tree is necessary in order not to obscure a view. Good for highlights and entry features.

Comments: Columnar Goldenrain is a good, small, narrow tree that is seldom planted. Best planted from stock that has the roots balled with soil and wrapped with burlap.
