Characteristics: This Hawthorn has a dense, tightly upright habit with red-purple fall color. It has large double white blooms in spring and small red fruit in fall.

Negative Features: This tree has thorns and the fruit can be messy. Leafspot can also be a problem.

Uses: Good for narrow setbacks, underneath wires and tight situations where there is little room on arterial and collector streets. This is a good choice when a shorter tree is necessary in order not to obscure a view. Best used in limited quantity.

Comments: Columnar Hawthorn is good for very narrow setbacks. Due to berries and thorns, this tree is best used along natural areas and wetlands. It is not suitable for use in front of residences.
