Brilliant red purple canopy of Newport Flowering Plum.Facts About Newport Flowering Plum

Prunus cerasifera 'Newport'

Native to: Western Asia
Crown: Broadly oval to rounded
Height: 15 - 20 feet
Width: 15 - 20 feet
Growth Rate: Moderate

Characteristics: This tree has light pink spring flowers and purple foliage. It produces red-purple plums.

Negative Features: Flower color is not as good as Thundercloud. Surface roots can cause sidewalk problems in narrow planters. It is a short-lived tree with an expected urban life span of 20 years. It is prone to insects and disease. Deep colored foliage will tend to darken streets when used in mass plantings.

Uses: Good for underneath wires, cul-de-sacs and tight places. Good for highlights and entry features and situations where there is little room on arterial, collector and residential streets. Best used in limited quantity. This is a good choice when a shorter tree is necessary in order not to obscure a view.

Comments: Newport may produce more fruit than either Thundercloud, #118, or Krauter's Vesuvius, #119. Fruit can be messy.
