Purple leafed, vase shaped canopy of Krauter's Vesuvius Flowering Plum.Facts About Krauter's Vesuvius Flowering Plum

Prunus cerasifera 'Krauter's Vesuvius'

Native to: Western Asia
Crown: Vase-shaped, upright
Height: 30 feet
Width: 20 feet
Growth Rate: Moderate

Characteristics: This tree has single pink spring flowers that are followed by deep purple foliage.

Negative Features: It is not as hardy as Thundercloud. Fruit can be messy. Surface roots can cause sidewalk problems in narrow planters. It is a short-lived tree with an expected urban life span of 20 years. It is prone to insects and disease. Deep colored foliage will tend to darken streets when used in mass plantings.

Uses: Good for underneath wires, cul-de-sacs and tight places. Good for highlights and entry features, and situations where there is little room on arterial, collector and residential streets. Best used in limited quantity. This is a good choice when a shorter tree is necessary in order not to obscure a view.

Comments: Krauter's Vesuvius is similar to Thundercloud, but is a little smaller and more upright. Fruit can attract bees and be messy.
