Negative Features: Low branching requires regular pruning to develop an 8'-10' high canopy suitable for street tree use. This tree is subject to borers.

Uses: Good for narrow setbacks. Good for tight situations where there is little room on arterial, collector, and residential streets.

Comments: Pyramidal European Hornbeam has a very formal appearance. It is a tough tree for urban conditions. It can also can be found as Carpinus betulus 'Pyramidalis'. A columnar form is also featured on the tour, Tree #135.
