Native to: This is a complex cross involving U. pumila, U. xx hollandica, and U. carpinfolia
Crown: Moderately vase-shaped

Growth Rate: Fast

Characteristics: This is a complex hybrid with a pyramidal form when young that arches as it ages. Foliage is dark green with yellow fall color. It is close in form to the American Elm. Homestead is reportedly highly resistant to Dutch Elm disease.

Negative Features: Surface roots can cause problems with sidewalks.

Uses: Good for all street situations where room allows on arterial, collector, and residential streets. Suitable for planting along boulevards.

Comments: This new hybrid Elm promises to be an outstanding performer and an excellent replacement tree for Elms that are susceptible to Dutch Elm disease. Another good hybrid is 'Pioneer,' which has a more open form than Homestead and is extremely vigorous and disease resistant.
