Native to: Asia Crown: Upright pyramidal form, dense Height: 30 feet Width: 16 feet Growth Rate: Moderate to fast
Characteristics: Foliage is plum-red in fall with white spring flowers. Chanticleer has more resistance to fire blights than other Pears that are available. Moderate drought tolerance. Pea-sized fall fruit is attractive to birds.
Negative Features: This is a short-lived tree with an expected urban life span of 20 years. May need regular pruning.
Uses: Good for narrow setbacks and tight situations where there is little room. Good for highlights and entry features, and all street situations where room allows on arterials, collector, and residential streets. This is a good choice when a shorter or narrow tree is necessary in order not to obscure a view.
Comments: Chanticleer's dense branching can require additional pruning to develop a more open canopy. Fruit on Calleryana Pears is small, persistent, and does not drop, therefore it is not considered a messy tree. aka Cleveland Select Flowering Pear.
