1. What are some general guidelines for glass collection?

Glass bottles and jars rinsed of all residues can be recycled curbside in Beaverton. They must be separated from other recyclable materials, placed in the red recycling bin and set out on the curb next to your recycling roll cart. Glass collection takes place on the same day as your garbage and recycling, but a separate truck picks up the glass.

Do not include plastic caps, corks, bottle caps or any trash in with your glass recycling. This may result in your hauler refusing to collect your glass. Also, do not include any non-container glass such as broken glassware, pyrex, or dishes – these are not recyclable and should be placed in the garbage.

If you glass bin is not picked up on your regularly-scheduled pick up day, call your hauler to notify them of the error.

2. Why do I have to separate glass from the rest of my recyclables?

When glass mixes with other recycling, it often breaks. The broken glass damages processing equipment, creates risk to haulers and sorting crews and makes all of the materials un-recyclable. If you leave glass in the commingled mix, it actually does more harm than good in the overall recycling process.
