The Beaverton Sister Cities Foundation, a non-profit corporation, was established in 1986 to encourage cultural, educational, and economic relationships with cities from around the world. Particular attention was given initially to Pacific Rim countries, due to the strong existing cultural and economic ties with Beaverton. The first sister city relationships were established within Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea. A Russian city, located near the Pacific Rim, was the next relationship developed. Beaverton has since turned to the European continent, signing with a German city in 1993 and a French city in 1999.

Nationally, Sister City programs have been formed since 1956 and have provided opportunities for U.S. cities to foster civic spirit and encourage economic development throughout the world. Sister City programs link hundreds of American communities with cities in over 100 nations. People and ideas are exchanged. Dialogues between global neighborhoods are encouraged.

At the individual level, contact made through the program with people of like or diverse interests opens new horizons, brings personal satisfaction, new friendships and wider understanding of the world around us. The exchange of experiences between cities makes for sounder decisions and encourages the opening of minds to new ideas and solutions.

We invite you to take a moment and tour our Web site, and educate yourself to the exciting opportunities that are available when becoming a member of the Foundation. If you have any questions, we are just an e-mail away at sistercitiesmail@ci.beaverton.or.us.
