Recycle at Work

Beginning April 2009, Beaverton businesses are required to recycle their paper, cardboard and containers as part of a new Business Recycling Requirement.

Most Beaverton businesses already have recycling programs and others will need to expand programs to include additional materials: all paper, cardboard and containers (glass/plastic bottles, jars and metal cans). Recycling programs must be more than “just cardboard.” Beaverton garbage haulers provide recycling service as part of garbage services.

The new Business Recycling Requirement program is in its implementation phase until October 2010. During this 18-month period, the Recycle at Work program will provide assistance to businesses in setting up, expanding or maintaining their recycling programs. A toolit to guide your business to success will be coming to your business soon.

Recycling is an important part of being a sustainable community: Once in place, increased business recycling across the region will:

  • Eliminate carbon emissions equal to taking 42,000 cars off area roads
  • Result in energy savings that could power 15,000 homes per year
  • Save 1.2 million trees per year (equivalent to Forest Park)

Five Business Recycling Practices have been identified to help businesses implement successful recycling programs.

    1. Assign Responsibility

    • Who’s in charge of your program? Identify a person who will be responsible for implementing and/or maintaining your recycling program.

    2. Make It Easy

    • Place a correctly-labeled recycling container at least as conveniently as every trash can.

    3. Train Your Team

    • Train everyone who uses your recycling system on how to use it at least once per year and include your recycling program in new employee training

    4. Recycle Your Stuff

    • If you’re not already recycling paper, cardboard and containers, work with your garbage collector, property manager or custodians to set up or expand your recycling service

    5. Throw Away Less

    • Consider activities that would help your business dispose of less material.
