Processing Times

How Long Will It Take?

The passport application or renewal process can take four to six weeks. Please consider this timeframe when planning a trip abroad. Processing time varies depending on the volume of applications at Passport Services. Check www.travel.state.gov/passport or call (877) 487-2778 for the latest information on processing time.

New Passport

When applying for a passport you will need to do the following:

• Bring an application (form DS-11) and a proof of US citizenship (such as your birth certificate or naturalization certificate).
• Sign the application in person at an authorized passport acceptance facility
• The facility mails your passport application and submitted documents to U.S. Passport agency for processing.
• You will receive your new passport and supporting documentation in the mail six to eight weeks later.

Passport Renewal

If you already have a passport and need to renew it

• Mail the completed renewal form (form DS-82) and your expired passport to the Passport Agency.
  This form does not guarantee a faster processing time.
• You will receive your new passport and supporting documentation in the mail six to eight weeks later.

Expedited Application

If you need to get your passport more quickly, use the expedited application. Before you send in your application:

• Check www.travel.state.gov/passport/hurry/hurry_831.html to find out the current expedited processing time. Make sure you will have enough time before your trip.
• Use two-way overnight mail delivery (strongly suggested).

If you are within 10 business days of your departure:

• Call the Seattle Passport Office (877) 487-2778 to schedule an appointment. You will be required to submit all documents including proof of your immediate departure date.

Online Application Status

Effective August 12, 2005, customers who have recently applied for a Regular (Tourist) U.S. passport and want to know the status of their application may do so by accessing the U.S. State Department’s Application Status page.
